Les escribo para que me conozcan un poco: Pues, yo he leído su página del web, su reporte anual y su perfil parroquial hace tiempo ya. La temporada de espera para ustedes y para mí ha terminado, y estamos a punto a conocernos cara a cara y laborar juntos para el reino del Señor. Entonces adelante: Soy hijo de pastores y de misioneros. Nací en los EEUU, pero desde nueve meses de edad hasta los 18 años, viví en las Filipinas, donde mis padres sirvieron 40 años como misioneros Metodistas. Era en las Filipinas que asistí una escuela Episcopal y por primera vez usé el Libro de Oración de 1928. Volví a los EEUU in 1976 para vivir y comenzar mis estudios universitarios.

Tengo dos licenciados, uno en Inglés y otros en Español de una pequeña universidad en el medio oriente de los EEUU. Me casé con Amy Peterson, originaria de Davenport, Iowa. Ella deseaba vivir en Florida, y yo quería mucho a Oregon, entonces fuimos a Dallas, Texas en 1981, donde nacieron todos nuestros hijos. Ensayamos ser buenos Metodistas, pero hasta que Ame me trajo a la Iglesia Episcopal del Buen Pastor, nunca encontramos un hogar espiritual. Ahí participaba en el coro, enseñando escuela dominical, el grupo de oración contemplativa y fui confirmado junto con Amy. Amy servía como presidente de las Mujeres Episcopales (ECW) y en la Junta Parroquial (Vestry).

Fui guiado a responder a una vocación para ser ministro ordenado, y en 1991 toda la familia se mudó para Austin y el seminario. Nuestro hijo Erik tenía 9 años, las hijas Leilani 5 y Lara 3. Fueron años difíciles para nosotros. Sin embargo, hemos vivido en Austin has salirnos para Vancouver.

He servido como Vicario de una iglesia hispanoparlantes, director de programas de servicio social, director del centro para ministerio hispano, y canónigo de la Diócesis. Nuestros hijos ahora tienen 28, 25 y 23 años. Erik vive con su esposa cerca de Fort Worth. Leilani está comprometida para casarse. Lara vive cerca de su hermana en la ciudad de Austin.

Tanta alegría me siento que no pueda expresar mi agradecimiento por haberme llamado ustedes a ser su Rector. Los pocos de ustedes que conozco han representado bien el calor fraternal que une la feligresía en un solo cuerpo. Días porvenir proveerán la oportunidad para ingresarme en estos vínculos de amor, y hacerme parte de la expresión de la iglesia universal que es San Lucas. El futuro se está abriendo para nosotros juntos, buscando nuestra fe, esperanza y amor. Sabemos amar a Dios con todo nuestro ser, y al prójimo como nosotros mismo. Espero ser parte de este jardín que otros establecieron, otros regaron y otros abonaron para crecer juntos como Dios nos da la capacidad.

I’m writing you as a way for you to get to know me a bit: after all, I have been reading your web page, annual report, and profile for some time now. The time for waiting has ended for you and for me, and we are at the point of getting to know each other face to face, and work together for the kingdom of the Lord. So here goes: I am a PK and an MK (preacher’s kid and missionary kid). I was born in the US, but grew up in the Philippines, where my parents served for 40 years as Methodist missionaries. It was in the Philippines that I went to an Episcopal boarding school and first worshipped with the 1928 prayer book. I returned to the US to live in 1976 when I started college.

I have majors in English and Spanish from a little college in the Midwest. I married Amy Peterson of Davenport, Iowa. She wanted to go to Florida, I wanted to go to Oregon, so we moved to Dallas, Texas in 1981, where we had three kids. We tried to be good Methodists, but until Amy took me to visit the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Cedar Hill, Texas, we had not found a spiritual home. That led me to be active choir, junior high Sunday school, contemplative prayer group, and confirmation. Amy became ECW president and served on the Vestry after we were confirmed together.

That led me to recover a long denied call to be a minister, so in 1991 we moved to Austin and to seminary. Erik was 9, Leilani 5 and Lara 3. Those were tough years with little kids. We ended up living in Austin until we came here.

After seminary I was a Vicar of a church, an Executive Director of a social service organization and a Hispanic Center, Canon for the Diocese, and taught some courses over the years at the seminary. Our children are now 28, 25 and 23. Erik is married and lives near Fort Worth. Leilani is getting married this December. Lara is working and living near her sister in Austin.

Such is the joy that I feel that I cannot express my gratefulness for you having called me to be your Rector. The few of you that I know have done a good job showing the warm affection that unites you in one body. The days to come will provide the opportunity for me to enter into these bonds of love, to become part of the expression of the universal church that is St. Luke's. The future is opening to us together, seeking our faith, hope and love. We know to love God with all our being, and our neighbor as ourselves. I hope to be a part of this garden others planted, others watered, others fertilized, to grow together as God has given us the ability.
